Wise Men Still Seek Him: Worshiping the Newborn King
Scripture Focus: Matthew 2:1-2: “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’”
Introduction
The story of the wise men, or Magi, is one of the most intriguing parts of the Christmas narrative. These individuals traveled from the East, following a star, to worship the newborn King. Their journey symbolizes the quest for truth, the joy of discovery, and the ultimate act of worship. Today, we are reminded that wise people still seek Jesus, not only during the Christmas season but throughout their lives.
1. Seeking Jesus Requires Awareness
The wise men’s journey began with awareness. They noticed the star that signaled the birth of the King of the Jews. Unlike many in Israel who were oblivious to the fulfillment of prophecy, these men discerned that something extraordinary had happened.
- Lesson for Us: We need to cultivate spiritual awareness. God still speaks today through His Word, creation, and the Holy Spirit. Are we attentive to His signs?
- Practical Application: Spend time in prayer and Bible study to sharpen your spiritual sensitivity. Look for God’s fingerprints in your everyday life.
2. Seeking Jesus Demands Effort
The journey from the East to Bethlehem was long and arduous. The wise men faced challenges, yet they were determined to find the King. They left their comfort zones and made sacrifices to pursue their goal.
- Lesson for Us: Seeking Jesus is not always convenient or easy. It requires effort, discipline, and sometimes stepping out of our comfort zones.
- Practical Application: Dedicate time to worship, prayer, and service, even when it’s inconvenient. Prioritize Jesus above other demands and distractions.
3. Seeking Jesus Involves Worship
When the Magi found Jesus, they bowed down and worshiped Him, offering gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts were not random; they symbolized Jesus’ royalty, divinity, and sacrificial death.
- Lesson for Us: True seeking leads to worship. Worship involves not only adoration but also offering our best to God. Just as the wise men presented valuable gifts, we are called to give God our time, talents, and treasures.
- Practical Application: Reflect on what you can offer to Jesus this Christmas season. Perhaps it’s your time to serve others, your resources to support ministry, or your talents to glorify God.
4. Seeking Jesus Brings Joy
Matthew 2:10 tells us, “When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.” The wise men’s journey culminated in great joy as they encountered Jesus. This joy is a hallmark of those who genuinely seek and find the Savior.
- Lesson for Us: Joy is the natural response to experiencing Jesus. It transcends circumstances and brings deep satisfaction to our souls.
- Practical Application: Celebrate the joy of salvation daily. Share this joy with others by living out your faith in ways that draw people to Christ.
5. Seeking Jesus Leads to Transformation
After worshiping Jesus, the Magi were warned in a dream not to return to Herod. They obeyed and went home by another route. Their encounter with Jesus changed their course, both physically and spiritually.
- Lesson for Us: An encounter with Jesus changes everything. When we truly meet Him, our lives take a different direction aligned with God’s will.
- Practical Application: Evaluate your life in light of Jesus’ lordship. Are there areas where He is calling you to take a new path? Surrender to His guidance and trust His plan.
Conclusion
The story of the wise men reminds us that seeking Jesus is the most worthwhile pursuit. It requires awareness, effort, worship, and obedience but brings joy and transformation. Just as the wise men’s journey did not end at the manger, our relationship with Jesus is an ongoing adventure of faith and discovery.
This Christmas season, let us resolve to seek Jesus with all our hearts. May we offer Him our best, rejoice in His presence, and allow His light to guide us in all we do. Truly, wise men still seek Him.
