The Talents of Lily and Sam: A Story about Using Your Gifts for God

One bright Sunday morning, Lily and her brother Sam were getting ready for church. Today was special because their Sunday School teacher had asked everyone to think about what special gifts they had. Lily and Sam were excited but also a little confused.

“Gifts? Like the ones we get on our birthdays?” Lily asked as she tied her shoes.

“I don’t think so,” Sam replied, scratching his head. “I think it’s about talents—what we’re good at.”

When they arrived at Sunday School, their teacher, Miss Grace, greeted them with a big smile.

“Good morning, class! Today, we’re going to learn about using our gifts to serve others,” she said.

Miss Grace opened her Bible to 1 Peter 4:10-11 and read aloud: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.”

She looked up at the kids. “Do you know what that means?” she asked. The class shook their heads.

Miss Grace smiled and explained, “It means God has given each of us special gifts, like being good at drawing, singing, helping others, or even being a great listener. And He wants us to use those gifts to help others and make the world a better place.”

Lily raised her hand. “I love to draw! Could that be my gift?”

“Absolutely!” Miss Grace nodded. “You can use your drawing to encourage others, maybe by making cards or creating pictures that show God’s love.”

Sam thought about what he was good at. He loved helping people. He always helped his mom clean the house and enjoyed volunteering with his dad to help their neighbors. “What about helping? Is that a gift?” Sam asked.

Miss Grace smiled even brighter. “Yes, Sam! That’s a wonderful gift. Helping others shows God’s love in action. When you serve others, you are doing exactly what 1 Peter 4:11 tells us—to serve with the strength God provides.”

Lily and Sam both felt excited. They had never realized that the things they loved to do were gifts from God. Miss Grace continued, “No matter what your gift is—whether you’re good at talking, teaching, drawing, or helping—God wants you to use it to help others. And when you do, you’re honoring Him!”

That afternoon, Lily drew a beautiful picture of a rainbow with the words, “God loves you!” She gave it to a friend who was feeling sad. Sam helped his mom carry groceries to the car and later cleaned up the yard for an elderly neighbor. Both Lily and Sam felt a special joy knowing they were using their gifts for God.

Miss Grace had taught them an important lesson: God gives us each unique talents, and when we use them to help others, we are serving Him and spreading His love.

Moral of the Story:
God has given each of us special gifts, and when we use those gifts to serve others, we are honoring Him. Whether your talent is big or small, it’s important to use it for God’s glory!
