Sermon: The Power of Seeking God – Lessons from 2 Chronicles
Good morning, beloved congregation! Today, we’re diving into the powerful teachings found in the book of 2 Chronicles. This often-overlooked book is filled with wisdom, stories of triumph, and warnings for those who turn away from God. As we journey through these scriptures, let us open our hearts to receive the timeless truths that can transform our lives today.
-
Seeking God’s Presence (2 Chronicles 7:14)
The heart of 2 Chronicles lies in this powerful verse: “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
Here, God reveals a profound truth: He responds to a humble and repentant heart. If we want to see change in our lives and our communities, we must start by seeking God’s presence. This requires humility, prayer, and a genuine desire to turn away from sin.
Are you burdened by the challenges of life? Are you yearning for healing and restoration? The answer lies in seeking God. Let us humble ourselves before Him, earnestly seeking His face, knowing that He promises to hear our prayers, forgive our sins, and bring healing to our lives.

Remembering God’s Faithfulness (2 Chronicles 20:15–17)
In 2 Chronicles 20, we find the story of King Jehoshaphat facing an overwhelming enemy army. In the face of this impossible situation, Jehoshaphat’s response is to seek God. He proclaims a fast throughout Judah and cries out to the Lord for help.
God responds by sending a prophetic message through Jahaziel: “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.”
Here we see the power of remembering God’s faithfulness. Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah were reminded that their victory was not dependent on their own strength, but on the faithfulness of God. They praised God even before the battle began, and as they went out to face their enemies, God fought on their behalf.
Are you facing overwhelming challenges in your life? Do you feel like you’re fighting battles that you cannot win? Remember God’s faithfulness. Recall the times He has delivered you in the past. Just as He fought for Jehoshaphat, He will fight for you. Stand firm in faith, knowing that the battle belongs to the Lord.

The Consequences of Pride (2 Chronicles 26:16–21)
While 2 Chronicles is filled with stories of God’s deliverance, it also serves as a warning against pride and disobedience. In 2 Chronicles 26, we read about King Uzziah, who started his reign seeking God and experiencing great success. However, as he grew powerful, Uzziah became proud and decided to enter the temple to burn incense, a task reserved for the priests alone.
When confronted by the priests, Uzziah became angry and refused to listen. As a result, God struck him with leprosy, and Uzziah lived out his days as an outcast.
Uzziah’s story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of pride and disobedience. No matter how successful or powerful we may become, we must never forget to humble ourselves before God. When we exalt ourselves, we open the door to destruction.
Are there areas of pride in your life? Are you disobeying God’s commands? Take heed of Uzziah’s example. Humble yourself before God, repent of your sins, and submit to His will. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).

Seeking Wisdom and Understanding (2 Chronicles 1:7–12)
In 2 Chronicles 1, we witness Solomon’s ascent to the throne of Israel. When God offers him anything he desires, Solomon asks for wisdom and understanding to govern God’s people effectively.
God is pleased with Solomon’s request and grants him wisdom, along with wealth and honor. Solomon becomes renowned for his wisdom, and his reign is marked by peace and prosperity.
Solomon’s story teaches us the value of seeking wisdom and understanding from God. In a world filled with confusion and complexity, we need God’s wisdom to navigate life’s challenges and make sound decisions.
Are you facing difficult choices? Are you uncertain about which path to take? Follow Solomon’s example. Seek wisdom from God through prayer and study of His Word. God promises to give wisdom generously to all who ask in faith (James 1:5).
Conclusion:
As we conclude our journey through 2 Chronicles, let us remember these timeless truths:
- Seek God’s presence with humility and prayer, knowing that He hears our cries and brings healing to our lives.
- Remember God’s faithfulness in times of trouble, knowing that the battle belongs to Him.
- Guard against pride and disobedience, recognizing that humility is the key to God’s favor.
- Seek wisdom and understanding from God, knowing that He will guide us in all things.
May we be a people who seek God wholeheartedly, remembering His faithfulness, walking in humility, and seeking wisdom from above. May the lessons of 2 Chronicles transform our lives and draw us closer to the heart of God. Amen.
