Sermon: The Desire of the Righteous: Trusting in God’s Promises

When we come to Christ and embrace salvation, our hearts are filled with hope, faith, and a desire to live righteously. Yet, the journey of faith can feel challenging, especially as we face temptations, trials, and uncertainties. Proverbs 10:24 provides a clear contrast between the fate of the righteous and the wicked, reminding us of the ultimate trust we must place in God’s promises.

Proverbs 10:24 (NIV) says:
“What the wicked dread will overtake them; what the righteous desire will be granted.”

This powerful verse speaks directly to the heart of what it means to live as a follower of Christ. It reassures us that the desires of those who walk with God will be fulfilled, while the fears of the wicked will come to pass. For newly saved Christians, this verse is a beacon of hope, showing that God’s will for the righteous is to grant their deepest desires, in alignment with His divine plan.

1. The Fear of the Wicked

2. The Desire of the Righteous

“What the righteous desire will be granted.”

Who are the righteous? The righteous are those who have accepted Christ as their Savior, repented of their sins, and now walk according to God’s will. As new Christians, their hearts have been transformed, and their desires begin to align with God’s purposes. The desires mentioned in this verse are not selfish wants or materialistic cravings; they are the deeper yearnings for peace, joy, spiritual growth, and God’s kingdom to manifest in their lives.

  “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Jesus taught that if we seek God and His righteousness first, everything we need—whether it’s peace, provision, or guidance—will be added to us. For those just beginning their walk with Christ, this is an invitation to prioritize their relationship with God above all else.

3. Trusting in God’s Timing

One key aspect of Proverbs 10:24 is the idea that the righteous’ desires will be granted, but it is essential to remember that God’s timing is perfect. Newly saved Christians may feel impatient or unsure when they don’t see their desires fulfilled immediately. This is where faith comes into play.

• Isaiah 40:31 (NIV):
  “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Waiting on the Lord can be challenging, but it renews our strength. The righteous are called to trust in God’s timing, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill His promises.

• Habakkuk 2:3 (NIV):
  “For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.”

God’s promises may take time to manifest, but they will never fail. New Christians can take comfort in knowing that God is working behind the scenes, even when things seem slow. Their desires, when aligned with God’s will, will be fulfilled.

4. Encouragement for the Journey Ahead

As new believers, it’s vital to stay encouraged and steadfast in faith. Proverbs 10:24 assures them that while the wicked will face the consequences of their rebellion, the righteous will see their godly desires fulfilled. However, this journey requires trust, perseverance, and a continual alignment with God’s will.

• Philippians 1:6 (NIV):
  “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
