Sermon: Starting the New Year with God’s Purpose

Scripture Focus:

  • Key Text: Jeremiah 29:11
  • Supporting Texts: Proverbs 3:5-6, Isaiah 40:31, Philippians 3:13-14, Matthew 6:33

Brothers and sisters in Christ, we have gathered here today on the first Sunday of the year to worship our Almighty God, who has carried us through the past year and brought us into a fresh beginning. The start of a new year is often a time of resolutions, hopes, and plans. But as Christians, our focus should be less on human aspirations and more on aligning our lives with God’s divine purpose. Today, I invite you to reflect on how we can dedicate this new year to God and seek His will in all we do.

Our key verse, Jeremiah 29:11, reminds us of God’s promise: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” This verse, though spoken to the Israelites during a challenging time, continues to resonate with us as a testament to God’s faithfulness and His good plans for our lives.

1. Trusting God with the Unknown

The beginning of a new year often brings uncertainty. We do not know what joys or trials await us. But Proverbs 3:5-6 provides clear guidance: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Trusting God means surrendering our plans and anxieties to Him. It means acknowledging that His wisdom surpasses our understanding. As we stand on the threshold of 2025, let us make it our goal to trust God more deeply, even when His plans seem unclear.

Application:

  • Begin each day with a prayer of surrender, asking God to guide your steps.
  • Memorize Proverbs 3:5-6 and meditate on it whenever you feel uncertain about the future.

2. Renewing Our Strength in the Lord

Many of us may feel weary from the burdens of the past year. The challenges of life can leave us drained and discouraged. But Isaiah 40:31 gives us a beautiful promise: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Renewing our strength begins with placing our hope in God. It involves setting aside time to rest in His presence through prayer, worship, and the study of His Word. As we move into this new year, let us prioritize spiritual renewal.

Application:

  • Set aside a regular time each week for personal worship and reflection.
  • Consider fasting and prayer as a way to seek God’s strength and direction for the year.

3. Pressing On Toward the Goal

The Apostle Paul encourages us in Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Paul’s words remind us to let go of past failures and regrets. A new year is a fresh start, an opportunity to leave behind the weight of sin and distractions that hinder our spiritual growth. Pressing on requires focus, determination, and reliance on God’s grace.

Application:

  • Take time to confess and repent of any sins that have weighed you down.
  • Set spiritual goals for the year, such as reading through the Bible, joining a small group, or serving in a ministry.

4. Seeking First the Kingdom of God

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus commands us: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This verse is a call to prioritize God’s will above all else. It is a reminder that our ultimate purpose is to glorify Him and to live as His ambassadors in the world.

As we make plans and set resolutions for the new year, let us ensure that God’s kingdom is at the center. This means aligning our choices, relationships, and ambitions with His Word.

Application:

  • Evaluate your priorities and ensure they reflect a desire to serve God and others.
  • Share the gospel with at least one person this year, fulfilling the Great Commission.

5. Practical Steps for the New Year

As we move forward, let us consider some practical ways to live out these principles:

  1. Strengthen Your Prayer Life: Commit to consistent prayer. Use a journal to record your prayers and reflect on how God answers them.
  2. Engage with Scripture: Read God’s Word daily. Consider using a Bible reading plan to guide you.
  3. Build Godly Relationships: Surround yourself with fellow believers who will encourage and support you in your faith.
  4. Serve Others: Look for ways to serve your church and community. Acts of kindness reflect God’s love and bring Him glory.
  5. Cultivate Gratitude: Begin a habit of thanking God each day for His blessings, both big and small.

6. Encouragement for the Journey

As we embark on this new year, let us be encouraged by God’s promises:

  • “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
  • “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

No matter what challenges or triumphs this year holds, we can be confident that God is with us. He is our refuge, our guide, and our strength.

Conclusion

Dear brothers and sisters, as we stand at the beginning of this new year, let us dedicate ourselves to walking in God’s purpose. Let us trust Him with the unknown, renew our strength in His presence, press on toward the goal, and seek first His kingdom.

May this year be a time of spiritual growth, joy, and fruitful service. Let us resolve to live each day for His glory, knowing that His plans for us are good. As we close, let us bow our heads and pray:

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for bringing us into this new year. We surrender our plans and desires to You, trusting in Your perfect will. Strengthen us to walk in faith, hope, and love, and guide our steps each day. Help us to seek Your kingdom first and to glorify You in all we do. May Your blessings rest upon us and our families as we journey through this year with You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Benediction:

“May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

Go forth in peace and serve the Lord. Amen.
