Room for Jesus: Making Space for Christ Amidst the Busyness

Imagine your life as a house with many rooms. Each room represents different aspects of your life—your career, family, hobbies, social activities, and responsibilities. During the holiday season, these rooms often become overcrowded, filled with decorations, shopping lists, travel plans, and parties. It’s exciting but can also become overwhelming.

Now picture the scene in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago. Mary and Joseph searched for a place to stay, but every inn was full. No room was available for the Savior of the world, so He was born in a humble stable (Luke 2:7). This story is not just a historical account; it’s a profound analogy for our lives today.

The Overcrowded Inn
Our hearts, like the inns of Bethlehem, can become overcrowded. Daily routines, work deadlines, and social commitments fill our schedules to capacity. Even during the Christmas season—a time meant to honor Christ—we often find ourselves consumed by gift shopping, festive gatherings, and endless to-do lists. While none of these are inherently wrong, they can leave little room for Jesus if we’re not intentional.

The Stable of Surrender
When there was no space in the inn, Jesus found His place in a simple, unadorned stable. This reminds us that Jesus doesn’t seek perfection; He seeks availability. He doesn’t require lavish accommodations but a willing heart. The stable, though modest, became a place of divine encounter.

Likewise, we don’t need to have everything figured out or present a perfect life to make room for Jesus. Instead, we need to clear the clutter of distractions and offer Him our time, focus, and hearts.

Clearing the Clutter
Imagine trying to invite a guest into your home when every room is filled with chaos. You’d need to declutter and create space. Similarly, making room for Jesus begins with prioritization.

  • Declutter your schedule: Set aside intentional time for prayer, Scripture reading, and reflection. Even a few quiet moments can transform your day.
  • Rearrange your priorities: Let Jesus take the central place in your life. Reflect on Matthew 6:33, which says, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
  • Simplify your focus: Shift your attention from materialism and busyness to the heart of Christmas—the celebration of God’s love through Jesus Christ.

The Gift of Space
When we make room for Jesus, we experience the fullness of His presence. He brings peace amidst chaos, joy in the mundane, and purpose in our actions. The rooms of our hearts, once filled with stress and distractions, become spaces of worship and rest.

This Christmas, let’s not allow the busyness of life to leave Jesus standing outside, knocking (Revelation 3:20). Instead, let’s welcome Him into the inn of our hearts, offering Him the best room. When we do, we’ll find that the true joy of the season is not in what we do but in whom we embrace—the Savior, Christ the Lord.
