Living in Freedom: A Devotional Journey through Galatians
The book of Galatians is a passionate letter written by the Apostle Paul to the churches in Galatia. This letter addresses the core of the Christian faith: salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Paul emphasizes the freedom believers have in Christ and warns against the dangers of legalism. As we journey through Galatians, we’ll draw connections to other books of the Bible to deepen our understanding of the themes Paul presents.
Day 1: Embracing the True Gospel
Galatians 1:6-9
“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!”
Paul begins his letter by expressing astonishment that the Galatians are turning away from the true gospel. He emphasizes that there is only one gospel—the gospel of grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Reflection: Reflect on Ephesians 2:8-9, where Paul also writes about salvation by grace through faith. Consider how easy it can be to fall into the trap of believing we need to earn God’s favor.
Prayer: Lord, help us to embrace the true gospel of grace and to resist any teachings that distort Your truth.
Day 2: Justified by Faith
Galatians 2:15-16
“We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.”
Paul emphasizes that justification—being declared righteous before God—comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not by following the law.
Reflection: Compare this with Romans 3:28, where Paul reiterates that we are justified by faith apart from the works of the law. Reflect on the freedom that comes from knowing our standing with God is secure through faith in Christ.
Prayer: Father, thank You for justifying us through faith in Jesus. Help us to live in the freedom that comes from this truth.
Day 3: Crucified with Christ
Galatians 2:20
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
Paul’s declaration here captures the essence of the Christian life—living by faith in Christ, who dwells within us.
Reflection: Reflect on Colossians 3:3, which speaks of our life being hidden with Christ in God. Consider what it means to have Christ living in you and how this transforms your daily life.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for living in us. Empower us to live each day by faith in You.
Day 4: The Promise of the Spirit
Galatians 3:14
“He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”
Paul connects the blessing of Abraham to the Gentiles through Christ, highlighting that the Holy Spirit is given to all who believe.
Reflection: Look at Acts 2:38-39, where Peter speaks of the gift of the Holy Spirit to all who repent and believe. Reflect on the incredible gift of the Spirit and how He guides and empowers us.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, fill us afresh today. Guide us, teach us, and empower us to live for Christ.
Day 5: Freedom in Christ
Galatians 5:1
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
Paul urges the Galatians to stand firm in the freedom Christ has given them, warning against returning to legalism.
Reflection: Reflect on John 8:36, where Jesus says, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Consider areas in your life where you might be tempted to return to legalistic practices and how you can stand firm in Christ’s freedom.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for setting us free. Help us to stand firm in that freedom and not return to the yoke of slavery.
Day 6: Walking by the Spirit
Galatians 5:16
“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Paul instructs the Galatians to live by the Spirit, contrasting this with living according to the flesh.
Reflection: Compare this with Romans 8:4-5, where Paul discusses living according to the Spirit versus the flesh. Reflect on what it means to walk by the Spirit in your daily life.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help us to walk by Your guidance each day, resisting the desires of the flesh and living in a way that honors God.
Day 7: The Fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit, characteristics that should be evident in the life of a believer.
Reflection: Reflect on John 15:5, where Jesus speaks about abiding in Him to bear much fruit. Consider how abiding in Christ helps us to bear the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.
Prayer: Lord, cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. Help us to abide in You and reflect Your character to those around us.
Conclusion
The book of Galatians is a powerful reminder of the freedom we have in Christ. As we embrace the true gospel, live by faith, walk by the Spirit, and bear His fruit, we reflect God’s grace and truth to the world. Let us stand firm in our freedom and live out our faith boldly, relying on the Holy Spirit to guide and empower us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the freedom we have in Christ. Help us to live by faith, walking in the Spirit, and bearing the fruit that reflects Your character. Strengthen us to stand firm against legalism and to embrace the true gospel of grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
