Letting Go and Letting God: How Surrender Brings Peace and Purpose
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Life can be a whirlwind. We chase deadlines, navigate relationships, and grapple with uncertainties. It’s easy to feel lost in the chaos, grasping for control, and desperately trying to force things into place. But today, I want to offer a different perspective, one rooted in faith and surrender. Today, we explore the transformative power of letting God lead.
The Bible is replete with stories of individuals who surrendered their journeys to God and experienced incredible outcomes. Take Abraham, for instance, in Genesis 12:1-3. God called him to leave his homeland and travel to an unknown land. Imagine the fear, the uncertainty. Yet, Abraham, “by faith, obeyed” (Hebrews 11:8). He placed his trust in God, and in return, God blessed him abundantly, making him “the father of a multitude of nations” (Genesis 17:4).
Think about Moses. A man raised in Pharaoh’s palace, destined for greatness. But God had a different plan. Moses fled, wandering the desert for years. Then, at the burning bush, God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt (Exodus 3). This daunting task seemed impossible, yet Moses, despite his initial reluctance, ultimately surrendered to God’s will. The journey was arduous, filled with challenges. But with God’s guidance, they reached the Promised Land (Exodus 14–19).
Perhaps the most powerful example is Jesus himself. Imagine the immense burden he carried: the weight of humanity’s sin, the knowledge of his impending sacrifice. Yet, in the Garden of Gethsemane, he uttered the words, “Yet not my will, but thine be done” (Matthew 26:39). This ultimate act of surrender paved the way for salvation, for the greatest act of love the world has ever known.
These stories illustrate a fundamental truth: when we let go of the need to control, and surrender to God’s will, incredible things can happen. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
But how do we hear God’s voice in the cacophony of life? How do we surrender effectively? Here are some practical steps:
- Prayer: Prayer is a two-way conversation. Open your heart to God, express your anxieties, and ask for guidance. Spend time in silence, listening to the quiet whispers of the Holy Spirit.
- Bible Study: The Bible is God’s word, a roadmap for our lives. Immerse yourself in scripture, seeking wisdom and understanding.
- Discernment: God speaks in many ways—through prayer, scripture, and even through the people around us. Be open to recognizing His messages in unexpected places.
- Faith: Surrender requires faith. Trust that God has a plan, even when you can’t see it.
Now, surrendering to God doesn’t mean a life free of challenges. The road ahead may still have twists and turns. But when we walk with God, we are never alone.
Consider the story of Joseph in Genesis. Sold into slavery by his own brothers, he endured years of hardship. Yet, even in the darkest moments, Joseph held onto his faith. He remained true to God’s calling, interpreting dreams and eventually rising to a position of power. His trials, though painful, ultimately led him to a place where he could save his family (Genesis 37–50).
Just as God worked in Joseph’s life, He will work in ours. He may not always take us where we expect, but He will always take us where we need to be. Romans 8:28 assures us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Letting go can be scary. It requires vulnerability, a willingness to let go of the reins, and trust in a higher power. But the rewards are immeasurable. When we surrender to God, we experience a profound sense of peace. We are no longer burdened by the weight of control, by the fear of the unknown. We are free to live with purpose, knowing that God is guiding our steps.
This doesn’t mean a passive existence. It means taking action, guided by God’s will. We are called to be active participants in His plan, using the gifts and talents He has bestowed upon us.
So, dear brothers and sisters, are you feeling lost in the whirlwind? Are you weary from trying to control everything? Today, I invite you to let go and let God. Open your heart to Him in prayer. Immerse yourself in His word. Seek His guidance, and trust in His perfect plan. Remember, surrender is not weakness, it’s strength. It’s the courage to trust in a love that is boundless, a wisdom that surpasses our own.
As we surrender, a beautiful truth unfolds: we are not merely passengers on this journey of life. We are co-creators with God, working alongside Him to fulfill His purpose. He has placed gifts within each of us, unique talents and passions. When we surrender, we allow these gifts to flourish, to be used for His glory and the betterment of the world.
Think about David, the young shepherd boy anointed king (1 Samuel 16). Despite his inexperience, David surrendered to God’s will. He used his God-given skills as a warrior and musician to lead Israel to victory.
Perhaps you feel your gifts are small, insignificant. But remember, in God’s hands, even the smallest offering can be used to create something magnificent. Just as five loaves and two fish fed a multitude (Matthew 14:15–21), our surrendered gifts, when combined with God’s power, can accomplish wonders.
The path of surrender is not always easy. There will be times of doubt, moments when the way seems unclear. But in those moments, cling to the promises of scripture. Isaiah 41:10 assures us, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Letting go and letting God is a lifelong journey, a continuous process of trust and surrender. But with each step, we experience a deepening peace, a growing sense of purpose. We are no longer lost in the whirlwind, but carried by the steady hand of our loving God.
So, let us go forth today, our hearts open, our spirits surrendered. Let us walk with faith, knowing that God will lead us, guide us, and use us to accomplish incredible things. May He bless your journey, brothers and sisters in Christ. Amen.
