
Finding Rest in the Restless: A Devotional on Surrendering to God’s Peace
In our fast-paced, information-overload world, true rest can feel like a distant dream. The to-do list never seems to get shorter, and anxieties about the future or regrets from the past keep us tossing and turning at night. Yet, the Bible offers a profound promise:rest in God.
Today’s scripture comes from Psalm 23:1-3: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”
This beautiful psalm paints a picture of God as a shepherd, providing for and protecting His flock. He leads us to places of peace and renewal, just like a shepherd would lead his sheep to find fresh water and grassy fields after a long journey.
But how do we access this rest in the midst of our relentless daily lives? Here are a few ways to cultivate that sense of peace God offers:
Surrender Your Burdens:
The first step to finding rest is acknowledging that we can’t carry everything on our own shoulders. In 1 Peter 5:7, we are encouraged to “cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
Imagine yourself physically handing over your worries to God, one by one. It’s not about pretending the problems don’t exist, but about trusting that He has a plan, and He will see you through.
Practice Gratitude:
Gratitude is a powerful antidote to anxiety. Often, we get so focused on what’s missing that we forget to appreciate the blessings we already have. Taking time each day, even just a few minutes, to reflect on the things we’re grateful for – our health, our loved ones, a beautiful sunset – can shift our perspective and bring a sense of calm.
In Philippians 4:6-7, we are told to “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Embrace Quiet Time with God:
In our constant state of busyness, it’s easy to neglect our spiritual well-being. Yet, spending time in quiet prayer, meditation, or simply reading scripture can be a powerful way to reconnect with God and find His peace.
Imagine carving out a quiet space, free from distractions, where you can simply be present with God. You may not hear an audible voice, but the sense of peace and calm that washes over you is a testament to His presence.
Focus on What You Can Control:
Much of our anxiety stems from dwelling on things outside our control—the past, the future, or the actions of others. Instead, scripture encourages us to focus on what we can control – our own thoughts, words, and actions.
In Philippians 4:8, Paul offers a practical guide: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
By consciously choosing what occupies our minds, we can cultivate peace and trust in God’s plan.
Remember, Rest Isn’t Always About Inactivity
Sometimes, the most restorative thing is not complete idleness, but a change of pace. Engaging in activities that bring us joy, like spending time in nature, listening to music, or pursuing a hobby, can be a form of rest.
Think of Jesus. While He advocated for rest for His disciples (Mark 6:31), He also led an active life, preaching, teaching, and healing. Finding rest is about finding balance, and nurturing your mind, body, and spirit.
Finding Rest is a Journey, Not a Destination
Remember, finding rest in God is a journey, not a destination. There will be days when anxiety creeps back in, and that’s okay. The key is to keep practicing these habits, to keep turning to God in prayer, and to trust that He is always there, offering His peace and love.
As you go forth today, take a moment to quiet your mind and breathe deeply. Feel God’s presence surrounding you. Release your worries to Him, and trust that in His perfect timing, you will find true rest.
