Beneath the Shadow of Your Wings: A Prayer Based on Psalm 91
Almighty God, our Refuge and Fortress, we come before you today seeking your shelter and protection. In a world swirling with uncertainty and danger, we lift our voices in praise, acknowledging you as our only true source of safety.
Just as the Psalmist declared, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1), we choose to dwell in your presence. We surrender to your loving embrace, finding solace in the shadow of your wings.
We confess our vulnerabilities, Lord. We are susceptible to the “snares of the fowler” (v. 3)—the temptations and deceptions that threaten to ensnare us. We are not immune to the “pestilence that stalks in darkness” (v. 6)—the unseen forces of evil that seek to harm us.
Yet, with unwavering faith, we declare, “Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence” (v. 3). You are our shield and our buckler (v. 4), a fortress that withstands any attack. No terror by night nor arrow by day can penetrate the security you provide.
Even when “a thousand may fall at my side, ten thousand at my right hand,” we know that “it will not come near me” (v. 7). You shield us with your faithfulness, a fortress that surrounds us (v. 4). We will witness the punishment of the wicked from a safe distance, for no evil shall befall us (v. 10).
Thank you, Father, for surrounding us with your angels. May they “bear [us] up in their hands, lest [we] strike [our] foot against a stone” (v. 12). Guide our every step, keeping us safe from harm, both physical and spiritual.
Empower us to tread upon the lion and the adder, the young lion and the dragon (v. 13). Give us strength to overcome any obstacle, any fear that may try to cripple us. We trust in your love, for you have declared, “Because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name” (v. 14).
Thank you for the promise of answered prayers. When we call upon you, you will answer (v. 15). You will be with us in trouble, deliver us, and honor us (v. 15).
With long life, may we be satisfied with your goodness (v. 16) and forever behold your salvation (v. 16).
May this psalm be a constant reminder of your unwavering presence in our lives. May it strengthen our faith and guide our steps. We offer this prayer in the powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Amen.
